When people picture a private jet crew they usually imagine a pilot and a flight attendant. The reality is a larger system. Every trip depends on the people in the cockpit and the cabin, but also on schedulers, maintenance technicians, and in some cases security professionals who make the flight possible. Understanding who does what helps owners budget, helps operators staff, and helps aspiring professionals find their place in business aviation.

This guide explains every role on a private jet crew, how crew size changes with the aircraft, what each position typically earns on a contract basis, and how operators source each role. Operators can request any of these positions through [**CrewBlast**](https://www.crewblast.co/crewblast-request), which connects them with a network of more than 15,000 verified pilots and flight attendants, with an average first response of 39 seconds.

**THERE IS NO SINGLE STANDARD CREW**

Crew size depends on the aircraft, the mission, and the principal. A light jet may fly with two pilots and no cabin crew, a large cabin jet usually adds a flight attendant, and ultra long range trips may add extra pilots so that the crew can rest.

## The Captain, or Pilot in Command

The captain holds final authority for the aircraft and everyone on it. The captain is responsible for flight planning, weather decisions, fuel, route choices, and the safe operation of the flight from departure to arrival. Captains also set the tone for the crew, coordinate with the operator and principal, and decide when a flight should not go ahead.

To act as captain on a business jet, a pilot needs an Airline Transport Pilot certificate or equivalent privileges, a current medical certificate, and a type rating for the specific aircraft. Type ratings are not interchangeable. A GVI rating covers the G650 and G650ER, a GVII rating covers the G500 and G600, a CL604 rating covers the Challenger 604, 605, and 650, and a CL30 rating covers the Challenger 300 and 350. The [**daily rate page**](https://www.crewblast.co/daily-rate) lists these captains at $3,000, $3,500, $1,800, and $2,000 per day domestic respectively.

## The First Officer, or Second in Command

The first officer shares the flying and the workload, monitors systems, handles radio communication, and serves as a second set of eyes on every decision. On business jets, two pilots are the standard minimum crew for operations that require a second in command. The first officer also prepares to take command if the captain becomes unable to continue.

Many first officers progress to captain as they gain experience and type ratings. Contract first officers are a common way for operators to cover trips when their own staff are unavailable, and for pilots to build relationships and flight time on new aircraft types. Verified credentials matter just as much for the second seat as for the first.

## Additional Pilots on Long Range Trips

Ultra long range flights across oceans or multiple time zones can exceed what two pilots can safely handle within duty limits. In these cases, operators add a third pilot, or a full second crew, so that pilots can rest in turn. The extra pilots need the same type rating and currency as the others, and their availability must be coordinated with the schedule.

Augmented crew arrangements also matter for compliance. Operations under Part 135 follow specific flight and duty time rules that differ from Part 91, which is why operators planning long trips should confirm crew limits during planning rather than at departure. The CrewBlast guide to pilot duty time limits explains the difference in detail.

## The Flight Attendant and Cabin Manager

On larger aircraft, the flight attendant is responsible for passenger safety and service. In a single attendant crew, that person handles everything in the cabin. On larger operations with multiple cabin crew members, a lead attendant, often called a purser or cabin manager, coordinates the team. Contract flight attendants are listed at $800 per day domestic and $1,000 per day international on the daily rate page. The [**contract flight attendant page**](https://www.crewblast.co/contract-flight-attendant) explains how operators source cabin crew, and the guide to [**what a corporate flight attendant does**](https://www.crewblast.co/blog/what-does-a-corporate-flight-attendant-actually-do-a-day-in-the-life) describes the role in depth.

## Security Professionals

Some operations add a security officer for high profile principals or particular destinations. The role is listed as ASO on the CrewBlast daily rate page at $1,000 per day domestic and $1,500 per day international. These professionals require specific qualifications and legal clearances, and the details depend on the route and jurisdiction. The CrewBlast guide to [**the role of armed security officers in private aviation**](https://www.crewblast.co/blog/private-aviation-security-the-role-of-armed-security-officers) explains when operators use them.

## The Team Behind the Flight

Behind every crew sits a support structure. Schedulers and dispatchers plan the trips, arrange permits and handling, and coordinate crew assignments. A director of aviation or chief pilot sets standards, manages hiring, and oversees safety. These roles rarely appear on the aircraft, but they shape every flight and every crew decision.

Maintenance technicians are the other essential group. Aircraft cannot fly without airworthiness, and a good technician can solve a problem before it grounds a trip. CrewBlast has expanded beyond the cockpit and cabin with [**AP mechanic sourcing through CrewBlast OS**](https://www.crewblast.co/blog/crewblast-os-expands-beyond-the-flight-deck-with-ap-mechanic-sourcing), so operators can cover maintenance needs through the same platform they use for flight crew.

## How Crew Size Changes by Aircraft Category

Light and midsize jets commonly fly with two pilots and no dedicated cabin crew, with the pilots handling passenger briefings and simple service. Super midsize and large cabin aircraft, such as the Challenger family, usually add a flight attendant because of the longer flights and higher service expectations. Ultra long range aircraft, including the Gulfstream G650, often carry a flight attendant on every trip and may add extra pilots for long sectors.

The principal's preferences also matter. Some owners want a flight attendant on every flight regardless of length, while others use one only for longer or more formal trips. Regulations can require cabin crew on aircraft with larger passenger configurations in certain operations, and insurers sometimes have their own expectations. Operators should confirm requirements for the specific aircraft and certificate rather than assuming.

## A Sample Crew for a Typical Trip

Consider a three day trip on a large cabin jet from New York to Los Angeles and back. The crew includes a captain, a first officer, and one flight attendant. The scheduler plans the trip, arranges handling and catering, and confirms crew availability. A maintenance technician prepares the aircraft before departure and stands ready for support. The director of aviation approves the plan and monitors the operation.

Each person has a distinct responsibility, and the trip works because those responsibilities fit together. If any one person is unavailable, the operator needs a qualified replacement quickly. This is why many operators build a preferred roster and also keep access to a verified network for emergencies.

## What a Complete Crew Costs

Budgeting for a complete crew means adding the roles together and including trip expenses. As an illustration, a three day domestic trip with a CL604 captain at $1,800 per day represents about $5,400 in daily rate cost for that position, and a contract flight attendant at $800 per day represents $2,400 for the same trip, before per diem, hotel, and positioning. Rates for every aircraft type are on the [**CrewBlast daily rate page**](https://www.crewblast.co/daily-rate), updated monthly from actual trip data.

Employed crew change the structure of the cost. Salary and benefits are incurred whether or not the aircraft flies, which gives continuity but raises fixed cost. Many operators blend the two approaches, employing a core and using contract professionals to cover gaps and peaks, which keeps total cost aligned with actual flying.

## Full Time, Contract, and Mixed Crews

Crews can be fully employed, fully contract, or a mix. Large flight departments with steady flying often employ a core crew and use contract professionals for peaks, vacations, training, and special missions. Smaller owners and some management companies rely heavily on contract crew so that cost tracks flying. The right mix depends on utilization, aircraft type, and the principal's preferences.

Whatever the model, verification is essential. Operators need to know that every person on board has current qualifications and that identity is confirmed independently of the documents presented. Insurers and safety auditors ask about this more often each year, which is why systematic vetting has become a standard part of professional operations.

## How Operators Source Each Role

Operators source crew through personal networks, staffing agencies, and real time platforms. Platforms broadcast a request to every qualified person in a network, producing responses in seconds, and CrewBlast ensures each crew member has completed [**CertiFly verification**](https://www.crewblast.co/certifly) including CLEAR biometric identity confirmation and background checks. For operators who source regularly, [**CrewBlast OS**](https://www.crewblast.co/crewblast-os) adds preferred contractor tools and full time hiring for $699 per month with no placement fees, and professionals can [**register free**](https://www.crewblast.co/register) to receive matching requests.
